positioning of a signature image onto a layout, programatically?

eric scheid-5
Client has a database table of contacts, and a database table of letter templates. There is a layout which combines the letter template record with the contact record, giving them a merged letter for printing.

Pretty simple .. but the client also wants a signature image to be placed onto the layout according to the letter template. Different letter templates have different signatures, and would land in different positions.

So, assuming there’s a container field associated with the letter template record to hold the signature image, what are some ways of controlling the position of the image on the layout?

Any bright ideas?

Eric,

How about allowing objects to slide up when printing? Might be tricky if it's a complex layout or a letter spans multiple pages.

Hi Eric,
I have that same setup for a form - merged data, container for signatures.

On the layout, make sure the block of text related to the signature, and the container with the image, are separate objects from the main letter.

[text object(s) w/ letter body and merged data here]

[Sign-off text and Sig. Container here]

The signature container sits on top of the Sign-off text object.  Neither should  touch the Letter body object.

Then, as John mentions, make them all slide up.

Ah, they key idea here is to split the letter content at the signature line, and thus have three objects on the layout, which then slide up:

[letter text above the signature]
[signature image]
[letter text below the signature]

That will work. So obvious in hindsight. =)

I’ve also hacked a version that uses a web-viewer with a data:text/html URL which contains an <img> element with a data-url for the image and they have to manually specify how far down the page the signature should be. Blech.

Since this is also in fmp11 I don’t have Base64encode and so they’d need to manually convert the sig-image into a dataURI (via many online services). Problem is that web-viewers don’t shrink like fields/mergetext objects do, and so the two page layout will print as a two pager even if the length of text is so short it would fit on one page.

There was also some mad idea involving calculated repeating fields but I’d rather believe I was having a fever dream.

Thanks everyone.

If this is FM16, how about a card window. You can define its position programatically. Format the borders to be transparent. I haven't tried this.
