Re: FTracking down bugs - Filemaker lost connection

Philip A. Femano, Ph.D.
Dave:

We are Mac based and went through a similar situation. We were on FM11 (FMP, FMPA, FMS) under Mac OS 10.7/8 and upgraded to FM15 under Mac OS 10.12 more recently. Our solution contains over 90 related files.

We noted many communication and connection errors during this major FM/OS upgrade. Here’s what we found:

1. MAC OS: Upgrading the Mac OS reset many of the network and energy saver Preferences back to the defaults. We had to go back into Prefs and re-enter our custom settings. Make sure your settings preserve the network connection and drive activity while the Mac is sleeping or idle.

2. FMS: Upgrading FM caused certain parameters related to auto login to be reset for files that are password protected. For one file, we had to change a password from “Admin” to “admin” (or was it vice versa?) before the auto-login worked!

3. FMS: Make sure FMS is set for the correct number of clients and to not disconnect if a client is idle for x-minutes (if your config has that setting).

Re: FTracking down bugs - Filemaker lost connection

Richard DeShong
Hi Dave:  Philip reminded me that I wanted to post...

I recall a tech conversation that was related to network errors after
users upgraded their MacOS.  Do not have details, but when you upgrade
the OS, the nic driver can also be upgraded.  This could change the
timing used to communicate over the nic.  So a connection that is
"acceptable" using one driver, can be "problematic" with an updated driver.

Another possibility is the nic might have been using 100MB and then with
upgrade, the new OS set it to 1GB.  With CAT5 cabling, that could be a
problem (depending on the length of the cable).
