Calculation issue

Jonathan Fletcher-2
Hi, All.

I’m trying to come up with a calculation that will gather the values of all the fields on a layout into a comma-delimited list.

My attempts at various combinations of Substitute, FieldNames, GetField, and Evaluate have come to naught.

I’d rather not hard code the fields into a calculation to keep it flexible and applicable to any layout I try it on.

Does anyone have a favorite method for this, or a promising suggestion?

Thanks!!!

Jonathan

Re: Calculation issue

Beverly Voth-3
Substitute ( List( field1;field2;field3;... ); Char(13) ; ", " )
remove the space if not desired.

This will be for EACH record. Is that what you wanted? Does this need to be 'dynamic' in the List() of fields?

Copy All Records might be slightly useful.  The field separator is the Char(9) tab.  And then things get messy.  Maybe change the Tabs to Linefeeds, wrap each value in quotes then rejoin them with comma separators.  And so on…

I think Beverly is on a better path.

Here's something dynamic:

Let ( [

        ~fs = char ( 9 ) ;
        ~rs = char ( 13 ) ;

        ~t = get ( LayoutTableName ) ;
        ~f = FieldNames ( get ( fileName ) ; get ( layoutName ) ) ;

        ~len = length ( ~f ) ;
        ~f = left ( ~f ; ~len - 1 ) ;

        ~fL = "\"" & Substitute ( ~f ; "¶" ; "\",¶ \"" ) & "\"" ;

        ~q =
                List (
                        "SELECT" ;
                        " ~field" ;
                        "FROM" ;
                        " ~table" ;
                ) ;

        ~sql =
                substitute (
                        ~q ;
                        [ "~field" ; ~fL ] ;
                        [ "~table" ; quote ( ~t ) ]

Just realized you'll want to include a WHERE clause with the ID of the current record.

How about

Let ([
fn = FieldNames ( Get ( FileName ) ; Get ( LayoutName ) ) ;
names = Replace ( fn ; Length ( fn ) ; Right ( fn ; 1 ) = ¶ ; "" ) ;
expression = Substitute ( names  ; ¶ ; "&\",\"&" )
] ;
Evaluate ( expression )
)

it seems that Filenames sometimes (when in Table view) returns a trailing CF hence the intermediate variable to get rid of any such

cheers

Is there something I'm missing? Seems like we're overthinking it:

Substitute ( FieldNames ( ""; "" ) ; ¶ ; ", " )

I almost did the same thing, but Jonathan wants the values of the fields.

I’m still trying to see which of the others will work best in my situation, but to answer your question, Tom, I need the contents of the fields, not just the field names.

Thanks, though!

Ok. This was it. Copy and paste and it just works. Sorry, Peter, I couldn’t figure out how to add a WHERE with your preferred syntax, and since Tom Elliott’s calc works so easy, I just stopped there.

Thanks, all!

T.E., have you considered adding that to the custom function sites?
